Music Sources

I believe that the music source is often one of the most under appreciated and overlooked component in many HiFI systems. Your choice of music source determines the level of musical quality that is delivered from the speakers. Simply put, poorly processed data means compromised music out of the speakers. It doesn't matter how much you spend on items like speakers and amps. If the data they receive is compromised and is not of a high standard then it's limited to what they can present to you. They can't make up for lower quality information fed to them.

I would encourage you to focus on selecting a high quality music source no matter if it's a CD player, music server/streamer or turntable. The same rule applies. If you do, you will better appreciate the rest of the system. There is a wide selection of music sources available, over the years I've put together some class leading brands and models that cover a wide spectrum of choice, and I would be happy to assist with you finding a solution that's ideal for you, your system and your budget.

Amplifiers

Amplifiers and preamplifiers are vital to our systems overall performance. Everyone seems to have a fav brand that they swear by as being "the best" or "the ultimate". That's probably come from past experience (it can be often somewhat limited) or from reviews, but how applicable to your system and room were they? Amps and speakers certainly stir up good discussion in the HiFi world, however, to be frank, nowadays there are probably few bad new model amps and preamps out there. But, that's not to say there isn't the ideal amp solution for you and your system.

These days, if you are prepared to make the investment, the variation between higher-end integrated amps and traditional pre/power amps isn't as significant as before, but there is still quite a significant difference in presentation between valve and solid state amplification. But now, there are a few new high quality hybrid amplifiers available that could be an answer for some to help bridge that gap. (I've taken this path of late and very satisfied).

Key factors to help determine an amp choice should revolve around its ability to get the best out of your speakers, room size, system integration and importantly, how you like to engage with music. There is a wide selection of amplification available. Over the years I've put together some class leading brands/models that cover a wide spectrum of choice and would be happy to assist with you finding a solution that's ideal for you and your system.

Turntables

This can be an emotional subject within the analogue world. It has strong adherents to particular brands and various philosophies. There are those wedded to "old must be beautiful" and spend bucket loads coaxing life back into old relics, sometimes with a modicum of success. I am, however, of the school that new technology, when applied sensitively to this oldest of formats, can make LPs live on again at another level.

Nowadays I tend to lean towards mass and weight as the basic design criteria for the best turntables, but the subject is ever evolving along with tonearms and cartridges. The search never ends, but it's well worth the journey to be able to enjoy music at its best in a living room environment. After all, what other medium brings such organic insight and can elicit such an emotional response?

Loudspeakers

Following on from music sources, loud-speakers could be the 2nd most important choice we make when building a quality HiFi system. The rational being that no matter how good the other components are, it's often the speakers that determine the final way music is presented to us. They can open up the whole experience with insight and emotion or act like a funnel, compressing and limiting our full appreciation of the recording.

When considering speakers there is a lot to take into account, such as speaker/room size, room integration with walls, floor, windows & furniture etc, room placement, and seating position. A speaker’s aesthetics can be important for many. The music genre you tend to enjoy mostly can also have a bearing on some speakers suitability.

A speaker’s design criteria will significantly determine its overall music presentation signature and varies a lot between brands. Some present as being nicely balanced (rare) mellow, bright, forward, organic, toppy, bass focused, etc. The speakers design criteria is important. Is it a 2way, 2.5way or 3way and what is its frequency extension? The list goes on, but that's what I can assist you with. Speakers can be a significant investment. Cables

It's a simple fact that many of my clients will attest to, and regardless of the naysayers, good cables are the way to fine tune any good HiFi system if you want to discover just what it is really capable of. End of story! After many trials and customers’ feedback, I've ended up narrowing my cable selection down to just 3 brands that I feel achieve about all that's needed for the vast majority of HiFi systems.

TELLURIUM Q - from England is a constant winner of market awards across its extensive range. Their statement - "Find Out How Your Music Can Really Sound - Phase relationship in a signal is our focus". Their cables offer a lovely, balanced presentation across the whole spectrum, as you can invest more up the range so the music opens up even more. It is a popular choice for many audiophiles.

MIT CABLES - from USA offers a different approach with their exclusive Multipole and Filterpole Technology giving proven patented performances. I've focused on their new Heritage 2C3D and EVO series cable ranges that offer a nice range of options.

YTER - from Italy, developed by Massimilano for Franco Serblin for use inside his famous Sonus Faber Stradivari speakers. A simple, straight forward range of fine cables that won't break the bank, good enough to be the cables of choice by the Auckland Audio Society after a cable shootout.

There is a wide selection of cables available and over the years I've put together these class leading brands and models that cover a wide spectrum of choice, I would be happy to assist with you finding a cable solution that's ideal for you, your system and your budget.

Audio Accessories

If you want to max out the potential of your HiFi system investment, then it's good to consider such things as the rack the gear sits on, using isolation feet and power conditioning. This all goes towards bringing out a bigger sound stage, more openness and clarity. Also, where possible, consider some room acoustic treatment to deal with all the room interaction issues. You will be pleasantly surprised that by investing in these areas rather than replacing expensive amps and speakers, etc. just how much more you can find in your system.
