GOOD SOUND - Thom Moon
On this track McGovern doesn’t so much eat the mike as devour it -- intense and vibrant. Her accompaniment is largely piano, bass, and drums, with a smattering of other instruments, and the bass and percussion are recorded intensely "hot." For most small speakers, that would mean smeary sound, and with all the hoo-hah on this track even the Celestion 3 sounds slightly congested. The Usher S-520 handled it all with aplomb. Again: Advantage: Usher.
I’ve always loved the Celestion 3s’ effortless reproduction of everything but really hard rock, but the Usher S-520s beat them, the S-520 also had slightly greater bass extension

In a word, the Usher Audio S-520 sounded fabulous.it’s the closest to my goal of finding a really good small speaker that I’ve heard. Its reproduction is detailed, yet still able to produce a full sound in which the instruments that are supposed to blend (say, massed strings) come out sounding as one -- and its finish is worthy of a top-of-the-line speaker. Yet $479/pair can’t be considered egregiously expensive. The Usher S-520 is the small speaker to seriously consider. [review

I was immediately taken by the Usher S-520's midrange and high-frequency resolution. The sound was detailed and natural throughout the midrange, with a degree of low-level dynamic articulation unusually realistic for such a low-priced speaker.
Every recording of the female voice sounded extraordinary through the Usher..... Madeline Peyroux's Dreamland (CD, Atlantic 82946-2), her voice was rich, silky, and holographic. Mark Ribot's dobro exhibited perfectly natural transients and excellent low-level dynamic articulation.....
The S-520 was a particularly natural reproducer of percussion.
....whenever an instrument with considerable low-bass energy appeared, the Usher surprised me with its realism, especially with classical music. My notes are filled with such comments as "Wow, nice timpani!" and "Bass drum very realistic but not quite room-shaking."
....the Epos is a good little speaker, however, Usher makes a little monitor, the S-520, that is beyond belief in terms of performance, construction, quality, and price.
Over a wide range of music, the Usher S-520 satisfied me during the many weeks it visited my system, and I found its modern white cabinet attractive. The Usher S-520 is an excellent value with many strengths and negligible shortcomings, and should find a home in many an affordable system. [review
