The sum of Tannoy’s rich heritage, cutting-edge technical innovation and world renowned acoustic engineering.

Kingdom Royal is a wholly new loudspeaker design, the product of four years extensive R&D that pushed the boundaries of acoustic performance. Key to the design is an all-new reference 12in Dual Concentric™ driver featuring a revolutionary ultra-light, ultra-rigid multi-fibre mid-bass cone and a radical new HF unit. The Dual’s HF driver mates a 3in heat-tempered aluminium alloy dome with tulip wave-guide to a 1.5kg ferrite motor to create a true horn-loaded compression driver. At 16kHz the Dual Concentric’s HF unit crosses over to the latest evolution of Tannoy’s SuperTweeter with an even extension out to 54kHz. To deliver extraordinarily deep and superbly controlled bass, Kingdom Royal features a 15in multi-fibre bass driver with a massive ferrite motor system utilising an under-hung voice coil to provide precise linearity. Not simply a sledgehammer for ultra-deep bass, the driver is capable of reproducing LF down to 15Hz with incredibly low coloration.

Kingdom Royal Carbon Black adds a new contemporary cosmetic to the outstanding Kingdom Royal loudspeaker concept. Remaining Tannoy’s flagship loudspeaker in terms of technical expertise and acoustic performance, the Carbon Black edition adds a bespoke carbon fibre outer to the plywood wrap, black Italian leather diffuser panel and new satin black coachwork. The carbon weave wrap is hand crafted as a bespoke project for each Kingdom Royal Carbon Black to create a unique loudspeaker concept. The traditional gold trim on the standard Kingdom Royal is replaced with hand machined aluminium parts for the Carbon Black edition, giving the design a striking black and silver cosmetic look. Machined aluminium parts include the massive rear port tube, itself weighing in at over 1kg. The grille cloth is upgraded to a heavily textured black weave to continue the contemporary cosmetic theme. Accessories such as the massive cones and floor cups are milled from aluminium to maintain the colour cosmetic throughout.

The Kingdom Royal Carbon Black edition fuses Tannoy’s decades of experience in loudspeaker design with the very latest in materials an engineering technology and wraps it in an ultra-contemporary cosmetic. This flagship loudspeaker delivers unrivalled technical performance and musical communication, outstanding dynamic range and class-leading communication with the music. The Kingdom Royal Carbon Black’s top-class build quality is complimented with a sumptuous blend of finish colours and textures to create a unique, contemporary, evolution of the high-end loudspeaker design.

Like the standard kingdom Royal, the carbon Black edition is built in Tannoy’s UK factory to the very best engineering and quality standards, each Kingdom Royal loudspeaker weighs 120kg and is supplied with a hand-crafted wooden box for its accessories. For those who demand the best and are looking for true no-compromise design both acoustically and visually, Kingdom Royal Carbon Black has no equal.

CROSSOVER - The Kingdom Royal has the largest crossover Tannoy has ever produced, being a double-decked design built on boards as wide as the cabinet interior. Silver solder, solid silver cables for the SuperTweeter and six-nines purity copper for the main wiring is complemented with Tannoy’s DMT™ (Differential Materials Technology) compound to bed-in components.

The entire four-way driver system is housed in a massive cabinet that mixes Tannoy’s birch plywood and machined fibreboard is an enclosure of striking visual scale and cosmetics. Italian leather super-tweeter dispersion panels, five-way binding post’s with WBT’s flagship terminals, enormous spike and cup feet and Tannoy’s signature adjustable HF energy panel complete the no-compromise feature set. Built in Tannoy’s UK factory to the very best engineering and quality standards, the result of this technical sophistication and acoustic heritage is one of the most linear, dynamic and responsive loudspeakers in the world, irrespective of cost.

Kingdom Royal is a true four-way design offering unrivalled extension and linearity from sub-bass (below 20Hz) to ultra-high frequencies (over 50kHz). At its heart is an all-new 12in Dual ConcentricTM drive unit that develops Tannoy’s long established DC technology to the limits of modern materials and current engineering technology. The new Kingdom Royal 12in Dual ConcentricTM driver is the most advanced coaxial HF/LF driver Tannoy has ever developed. With a new chassis and 10-point fixing, the outer bass/mid driver section mates a revolutionary ultra-light multi-fibre cone and copper clad aluminium edge wound voice coil to a massive ferrite motor system. Its hard edge roll surround has extremely low memory effect which further improves articulation in the mid and upper bass. The crossover to the DC’s high frequency unit occurs at an exceptionally low 700Hz to ensure the majority of the vocal region is handled by the new tweeter.

This HF drive unit couples a 3in heat tempered aluminium alloy dome and waveguide with a 1.5kg ferrite motor. Each production dome is individually tested and, along with the mated copper clad aluminium voice coil, undergoes full deep cryogenic treatment (DCT). This innovative process, involving freezing to -190degC and slowly thawing over a controlled period, relieves residual stresses in the microstructure of the dome and reduces crystal boundary imperfections in the voice coil for greater naturalness and emotional communication of the music.

To produce critical musical harmonics well beyond the accepted range of human hearing, the Kingdom Royal SuperTweeterTM uses a high-tech magnesium alloy dome that offers remarkable coherence and near flat extension out to over 61kHz. Each dome is vapour coated with a thin ceramic layer, producing a high internal damping and low colouration, before being meticulously plasma treated by hand and bonded to the voice coil. Combined with a Neodymium motor and rear damping cavity, the new SuperTweeterTM offers outstanding linearity and accuracy, alongside higher sensitivity and wider bandwidth than Tannoy’s previous generation titanium SuperTweetersTM.

To deliver bass and sub-bass performance to match the new DC and Supertweeter drivers, Kingdom Royal uses a 15in multi-fibre bass driver with massive ferrite motor system and underhung voice coil. The result is significantly lower distortion than traditional large surface area driver designs and class leading articulation down to well below 20Hz.

"Many brands and types of component were auditioned and rejected before the final configuration."

The entire crossover is decoupled from the cabinet base using an innovative free-floating mounting system incorporating rubber suspension turrets and brass rods to separate the two layers. Both upper and lower boards are hard-wired using silver-loaded solder and Acrolink’s six-nines copper (99.9999% pure copper) cable. After extensive testing 99.997% purity single strand silver cable was chosen for the SuperTweeter circuit for its exceptional top end transparency. Tannoy’s DMT™ (Differential Materials Technology) compound is used to bed-in components, further improving damping and resulting in greater naturalness and pin-point imaging. Once assembled the entire crossover undergoes full Deep Cryogenic Treatment to relieve component and conductor stresses at crystal level, and deliver outstanding musical cohesion and smoothness.

At crossover component level, the component choice to match the new Kingdom Royal drivers was a critical design concern. Many brands and types of component were auditioned and rejected before the final configuration. Each crossover uses the very latest ICW ClarityCap MR polypropylene capacitors as these were found to have the lowest internal resonance and better self-damping than any other capacitor on the market. Low loss laminated core inductors are used throughout and non-inductive heat-sink mounted thick film resistors were chosen for their micro-dynamic capabilities and thermal stability. For impedance matching the Dual Concentric HF unit uses a custom-built autotransformer which proved to provide the very best acoustic results rather than a traditional resistive circuit. Adjustments for the Dual Concentric’s Tweeter and SuperTweeter energy levels are available using a new low-loss switching panel mounted on the front baffle. In a flagship loudspeaker the small details are as important as the key components and Tannoy has left no aspect of the Kingdom Royal unchallenged. For manoeuvring the substantial speaker it is supplied on castors but in its final listening position each speaker can be coupled to the floor using built in steel cones, on the underside of the speaker, which couple to substantial gold anodised aluminium feet. On the rear panel the finest WBT™ binding posts are configured in Tannoy’s unique five-terminal design that affords bi-wiring or bi-amping as well as direct grounding (via the fifth terminal) for the chassis of the main drivers. Spare HF energy level control pins, spare SuperTweeter grille and six-nines pure copper bridging cables are supplied in a wooden presentation box.
