TECHNOLOGY - First class components.
Perfection is all about the detail. This is why the components of the Reference K loudspeakers are carefully checked and acoustically optimised. The results are impressive right down to the very last nuance of sound.

CHASSIS - Innovative driver technology
The drivers of the Reference K Series have been comprehensively redesigned. To maximise their rigidity while maintaining optimum internal damping, the woofer and midrange cone drivers are now also fitted with a ceramic-tungsten membrane. Not only does this enhance their outward appearance, but it also ensures a precisely controlled swing-in and swing-out behaviour across the whole transmission range. The natural resonance is therefore always outside the transmission range.

CERAMIC-TUNGSTEN TECHNOLOGY
The membranes of the K Series are manufactured in an elaborate process. Up to 20 % of the existing molecular structure of the cone is transformed into a ceramic structure and refined with tungsten particles. The result is a membrane with an optimum ratio of rigidity to weight and improved inner damping.

PERFECT TWEETERS
Ceramic is a unique material in the world of sound. That’s why the Reference tweeters have evolved still further to include a one-piece ceramic dome for the K Series. The one-piece wave guide, which first appeared in the Reference Jubilée, now supports the dispersion characteristics of the K system.

STRICKING TCC MIDRANGE SYSTEM
The triple-curved cone membrane of the midrange speaker with its ceramic-tungsten structure represents an optimum design standard. Together with the new, tripled-folded wave surround, it gives extreme rigidity and excellent balance in terms of the swing-in and swing-out behaviour through to the highest frequencies. Another new feature in the shape of the high quality front rings made from die-cast aluminium increases the mechanical stability of the driver system.

INNOVATIVE WOOFERS
The woofers now also come with a ceramic-tungsten membrane. This gives optimal control of the surround behaviour, allowing perfect bass tones at all volumes.

SOLID CABINET DESIGN
The acoustically optimised cabinet with its organic curved baffle offers significantly improved dispersion characteristics. The solid construction of high quality 50 mm multi-layer laminate sets new standards in terms of stability. The characteristic bow shape of the cabinet is created from solid material in a special process.

BASS-GUIDE
The floorstanding loudspeakers of the Reference K Family operate with the new Bass-Guide® bass reflex system. Vibrations are directed away from the cabinet and flow noise is reduced. The usable inner volume of the loudspeaker is maximised while the external dimensions remain the same and there is greater flexibility in the set-up location. The distance from walls or corners no longer has much impact.

SURFACES
The elegant, high gloss, “piano finish” surface is applied and polished in a 12- stage process. It gives the cabinets of the Reference K Series a sensation of extraordinary depth. Acoustically optimised, two-part fabric covers with magnetic fastenings complete the exclusive look.

SPEAKER CONNECTION TERMINALS
The high quality connection area with four gold-plated screwclamp terminals is suitable for cable diameters up to 10 mm2 and special cable shoes. This provides secure connections Crossovers with long-term stability.

CROSSOVERS
The crossovers of the Reference 1 K and 3 K speakers discreetly separate the bass, mid-range and treble ranges. Only selected components with no tolerance are used in the manufacture of their low-resonance circuit boards. Here it is not just a matter of separating an audio signal but also of creating sounds.

EXCLUSIVE CABLING
Cabling is reduced to a minimum. The cables themselves are specially developed for the Reference K loudspeakers. The design, with its special core and six twisted individual conductors per phase, ensures optimum sound transmission from the connection terminal to the chassis.

GRILL COVERS
Acoustically optimised fabric covers with magnetic fastenings complete the exclusive look.

SURFACE - Available on the following finishes:
Black lacquer “piano finish“ (standard)
Cherry veneer “piano finish” (optional)

If you are looking for loudspeakers that reproduce accurately every tone and have the ability to penetrate through each melodic layer, the Reference K5 CH can be the right choice for many years to come.

Verdict: Canton Reference 5K

★★★★★ These beautifully designed loudspeakers will become the pride of many a salon,German speakers have incredible precision and above all the ability to play with high resolution, because every musical genre played through them is clear and with great ease you can reach such sound layers, which for various reasons could be omitted while listening to other speakers. In the case of Reference 5K, the producer put a lot of emphasis on neutrality of color on the one hand, and on the other on the resolution of playing, regardless of whether the given sound is played in the bass or higher midrange ranges. As a result, we receive a reliable, consistent and mature message, with a great playing technique, which is undoubtedly the most important thing in Canton's case

The Canton brand can boast a long tradition and a reputation that goes far beyond the domestic German market.

The catalog of its products is very extensive and includes constructions from practically all price ranges. The most popular are loudspeakers from the medium price range, the Vento or Chrono SL series, which customers value for their great value for money. Of course, the catalog also has many much cheaper designs, which are also very popular. The Karat and Reference series have been prepared for the most demanding music lovers who have a sufficiently rich portfolio. The floor speakers described here belong to one of these higher series, and their characteristic feature is not only the extensive three-way speaker system, but also massive and solidly made housing.

The Reference 5K looks like a loudspeaker not to "get in" and there is something in it, because they are able to take from the amplifier a lot of continuous power, which can reach up to 440 watts. Nevertheless, during the tests it turned out that the Reference 5K are not very demanding in relation to the amplifiers. Therefore, when considering their purchase, it is worth remembering that to control them properly, you do not need a "furnace" with a lot of power and current efficiency. This should, of course, be considered a plus.

Chic and style
I must admit that these solid columns weighing a total of almost 80 kilograms look elegant and chic, without betraying the appearance of their large mass. Noteworthy is the fact that the used crates are designed for dictation of their high stiffness and inertia, because it is these aspects that matter when there are two powerful woofers in the acoustic chamber that generate bass going down to 20Hz. The German producer has created beautiful shapes with a clean form - the version finished with white & black piano lacquer for high gloss looks particularly attractive, and the one in natural cherry veneer covered with several layers of varnish, also finished with a high gloss, which gives the chests an exclusive character. The side walls are arched and the box narrows towards the rear. In addition, all edges are significantly rounded, and the speakers are placed in openings with carefully prepared cutters. Generally, the whole gives the impression of a monolithic shape with a more pleasing to the eye line.

The massive plinth is connected to the housings by means of two longitudinally extending under the side walls, specifically profiled slats - they form a kind of space with a flat outlet channel from the resonance tunnel located on the bottom of the chest - the solution is certainly elegant, but also interesting, because in a sense combines the classic bass-reflex with an additional aerodynamic system, improving the propagation of the air masses leaving the resonant tunnel, directed additionally to the back and forward, so that we managed to nicely equalize the pressure in the low tones. For this reason, the Reference 5K are relatively easy to set with speakers, however, due to their characteristics in the low tone range, you need to keep moderation from moving them to the walls.
After numerous attempts to set them up, it turned out that the distance of one meter from the wall behind them and one and a half meters from the side walls is optimal, so that in a room with an area of about 30 square meters you can enjoy not only nicely balanced bass, but also evenly distributed sound weight in full acoustic band.

The manufacturer has used dual terminals, the upper pair of jumpers is connected to the mid-range tweeter module, while the lower one is used to connect the amplifier to the low-frequency section. It is worth emphasizing, however, that we do not necessarily need to use the bi-vorting option, especially bi-amping, because Reference 5K CH does not - despite the unpredictable values given in the table with technical data - belong to columns difficult to drive. However, if someone is a fan of experimenting with final stages or using double cables.

The three-way speaker system is based on two woofers, where both 200mm units work in a common, ventilated chamber. Their tungsten-ceramic membranes have a special upper suspension, "holding" symmetry at the full pitch of the diaphragm, which is very important in the case of speakers reproducing the bass range, because they work at the greatest amplitude of tilts. Interestingly, a membrane of the same material was used to build a midrange speaker, but its other parts are completely different - for obvious reasons it was enclosed in a separate, airtight chamber, suppressed by a specially prepared material absorbing a higher frequency range than in the low-range chamber. Ceramics found a wider application for this model

All loudspeakers are solid, with molded baskets and adapted to carry considerable power, as evidenced by efficient cooling systems, as well as powerful magnets. Filters in the cross-section divided into three distinct sections are very complicated and are based on very good quality elements - block and cylindrical polypropylene capacitors were used, and the most demanding lowest distortion circuits included air coils. Noteworthy is also a very convenient system for leveling the boxes - special feet made of light alloys work precisely and without the slightest resistance. The canvas masks are fixed by means of a magnetic system, but I think that hardly anyone will want to cover them with beautiful-looking fronts.

Large sound from large chests
Reference 5K CH can create an impressive sound performance based mainly on monumentally sounding bass and extensive stereo music. The tested loudspeakers extend before the listener a sound stage consisting of meticulously placed virtual sources, with particular emphasis on the sharpness of the location and the order on the stage. Cantons sound technically, so listening to these speakers, you can learn a lot about the specifics of specific albums or the songs themselves. Reference 5K CH particularly impressed me in the classical repertoire, especially with large symphonic compositions. Listening to Bach from DSD files, I got the impression that the range of low tones was played with full breath, without limitations and with a large pump, and at the same time reliably and meticulously, with attention to both color and contour.

A few albums by Brian Eno sounded great - quiet, instrumental sound passages with lots of electronics, as well as shocking dynamics and avalanche growing volumes, the numbers were credible, but above all, with proper control. Such songs as "Written Forgotten" with a deeply flowing bass line are a feast for the ears and I am convinced that fans of sound effects associated with bass processing can be delighted with these speakers, because they have absolutely no problem getting to the lowest parties, there where most of the loudspeakers simply lose frequency and get short. On the other hand, the "Bless This Space" issue from the album "Drums Between The Bells", kept in a slightly jazz atmosphere, sounded ripe, I would say sophisticated. Not only because of the impeccably presented dynamics, but above all the maturely reproduced sound of percussive discs, sparkling with the brightness, but also the richness of harmonics. It was similar with another energetic material of the Mesh band playing synth-pop with elements of rock - the song "Kill Your Darlings" sounded expressive and what a lot to write - engrossing!

German speakers have incredible precision and above all the ability to play with high resolution, because every musical genre played through them is clear and with great ease you can reach such sound layers, which for various reasons could be omitted while listening to other speakers. In the case of Reference 5K, the producer put a lot of emphasis on neutrality of color on the one hand, and on the other on the resolution of playing, regardless of whether the given sound is played in the bass or higher midrange ranges. As a result, we receive a reliable, consistent and mature message, with a great playing technique, which is undoubtedly the most important thing in Canton's case.

Good to know
Tested speakers, despite not very promising technical data, can still be powered by amplifiers with a capacity of 40 watts. During the test, in addition to such amplifiers as Hegel Rost or Accuphase E-470 I also used a much weaker structure, namely the S1 integrity of the Italian Gold Note brand, and it turned out that even those cataloged 40 watts per channel could handle a 33 square meter room. Generally, in the case of high volume levels, one could already sense that the amplifier plays almost 90% of its current efficiency, but the sound was still kept in check, and the bass was absolutely out of control. There was also no mention of audible distortions that negatively affect dynamic purity or readability of sound. It turns out,

Summary
Canton is a producer with a well-established reputation, and the tested model is only a confirmation of his skills in constructing and producing high-quality loudspeakers. Two woofers enclosed in a massive and rigid chamber do a great job, reproducing almost perfectly the lowest components. In spite of the massive lumps and impressive three-way speaker system, these loudspeakers will not be a problem even for amps with a capacity of several dozen watts. Reference K5, despite its precision and neutral character, does not sterilize music from beauty and characteristics of a given genre. If you are looking for loudspeakers that reproduce accurately every tone and have the ability to penetrate through each melodic layer, the Reference K5 CH can be the right choice for many years to come.
