Prehistory

After Helmut Brinkmann has spent a lot of time with a lot of interest and exploratory spirit with turntable engines, finally the drive Oasis with direct drive came into existence. Since this project was very well received by many music lovers, we decided to offer a second model with direct drive. The design of the "Bardo" is based more clearly on our "big" drives "Balance" and "LaGrange".

Interesting details and extensions

The picture shows the »Bardo« as a standard model with the magnetic direct drive. The »Bardo performance« comes with the Transistornetzteil with which also the drives »Balance« and »LaGrange« are operated. This affects a deeper bass response and a wider sound.

The tonearm base of the »Bardo« is rotatable and adjustable in every position. The Bardo can record tonearms from 9 "to 12". The tonearm base is drilled to match the customer's tonearm.

The ports are located on the back of the drive, they are equipped with RCA or XLR sockets on customer request. It is also possible to easily mount tonearms with DIN plugs or fixed cables.

The two possible speeds, 33 1/3 and 45, are switched with a switch on the front of the turntable and can be adjusted with a screwdriver at two small holes next to the switch.

Magnetic direct drive

The »Bardo« is powered by a magnetic direct drive developed by Helmut Brinkmann and produced by us. An annular magnet is installed in the bearing plate, which is also the engine mount at the same time, and is concentrically rotated by coils mounted under the magnet ring. An electronic circuit uses two Hall sensors (magnetic field-dependent resistors) to control the coils in such a way that a very uniform, slow rotary motion is created.

Many of the well-known direct drive motors were built for studios and radio stations, where it was necessary to achieve a very short run-up time of less than 1 second. For this very high-torque motors were used which brought strong Polrucken and wow and flutter with it. To avoid this, we have long been working on a motor control that provides just enough energy to keep the setpoint speed. The stator of the motor consists of four specially shaped field coils, which are aligned concentrically around the plate bearing with great precision. Due to sound comparisons, we did not offset the coils by 90 ° but placed them in an unusual 22.5 ° raster, which additionally reduces the poling due to the overlapping magnetic fields. The rotor of the drive motor is also the subtitle of the turntable, he carries on its underside the magnetic ring with 8 poles. In the engine, the speed of a tachometer disc of a reflected light barrier, converted into a variable voltage, a control circuit is supplied, which compares the speed with a via the trimmer adjustable reference voltage. Bearing heating, as with the »Balance« and »LaGrange« drives, is not necessary with the »Bardo«, since the motor is kept under tension even at rest, thus enabling a stable temperature of the bearing. which compares the speed with a reference voltage adjustable via the trimmer. Bearing heating, as with the »Balance« and »LaGrange« drives, is not necessary with the »Bardo«, since the motor is kept under tension even at rest, thus enabling a stable temperature of the bearing. which compares the speed with a reference voltage adjustable via the trimmer. Bearing heating, as with the »Balance« and »LaGrange« drives, is not necessary with the »Bardo«, since the motor is kept under tension even at rest, thus enabling a stable temperature of the bearing.

The RöNt II tube network device is the perfect complement to the »Bardo«.
